CB&Q GP30 969
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP30 969, believed to be at Yackley Avenue in Lisle, Illinois, circa 1963, photographer unknown but believed to be Chuck Zeiler. Sorry about lack of detail, This photo was scanned by me (Chuck Zeiler) but I cannot locate the print and/or negative. Number 969 was built in June 1962 (c/n 27180), became BN 2246, and rebuilt sometime after July 1989 as GP39E 2757.

CB&Q GP30 971
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP30 971 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on February 6, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in May 1963 (c/n 28293) on EMD Order 7652, it became BN 2248 and was retired in January 1985. Eight GP30's were built on EMD Order 7652 (#'s 970-977), and they were Phase II GP30's. At the request of the UP, EMD added a 10 inch cab extension on this side (the left, or Fireman's side) to better accommodate the crew, thus creating a Phase II GP30. The spotting feature of the extended cab is the lack of a stanchion behind the cab at the bend in the handrail. Complete GP30 Phase rosters can be found in the July 1989 Mainline Modeler Magazine, page 53. Note the second freight car in the consist is a tri-level auto rack loaded with new automobiles, to which the CB&Q is applying a liberal coat of diesel exhaust.

CB&Q GP30 971
Description:
CB&Q GP30 971 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois, June 7, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Judging by the shadows, it appears to be around Noon. That being the case, according to CB&Q Employees Timetable #10, this is Train #88, the daily Minnesota and Dakota Time Freight, due in Cicero at 12:30 PM CST. The trailing GP20 is 909, I couldn't make out the last GP20's number.

CB&Q GP30 974
Description:
CB&Q GP30 974 eastbound at East Eola, Illinois, January 1, 1966. Here's a story from Karl Rethwisch: If you're familiar with t`e westbound and eastbound yards at Eola Im sure youve noticed the "mirror" effect. Flipped 180 deg. on their long axis each yd. would be a near duplicate of the other. When workin the west yd alls as it should be, that is, the engine faces east, the lead is on the Engrs side, the Switchman is visible to the Engr and everyone has a good time. Now, lets work the EAST yd and compare. The engire faces east, the lead is on the Firemans side, the Switchman is nowhere within the Engrs sight and few (Engineers that is) have a good time. To accommodate the "backward" lead a three color light signal was installed on ~he south side of trk. 11. This track is roughly in line with the lead before the lead (ladder track) bends to the north. A Switchman is stationed in a metal shack adjacent to trk. 11 built especially for this purpose. In the shack are controls for the signal displays, a stove, paper, coal and a chair. When the Swman on the lead is ready to switch cars he lines the desired sw. and gives a "KICK" sign to the guy in the shack./Obligingly, the guy causes the GREEN light to display and the Engr "pulls er tail out" (throttle WIDE OPEN!!). After receiving a STOP signal from the guy on the lead the fell} in the shack displays a RED signal and the Engr shuts the throttle and applies the brakes. Wanna BACK UP?, just light the yellow and green lights at the same time and viola, rhe go backward. Sounds simple and, if everything and everyBODY works as designed, it IS. This may be a good time to inject a small note as it relates ta KICKIN. A good Engr. will kich until a stop sign is given by someone on the ground. Since the Engr has no idea where or how far the car(s) are goin he relies solely on the signals he receives from the ground. Switchil 101. Now, lets assume things are workin in a NORMAL manner, that is, the gent in the shack is distracted, tired or hung-over. As a result of any of the aforementioned malady's this gentleman may, on occasion, fail to take note of a signal being vigorously gipen by the guy on the lead. This oversight, however, usually occurs only when the signal being given is a STOP signal. Seems the SHOVE, BACK-UP or KICK sign is never overlooked, just the STOP signal. Fred Huntley is workin the east yd with his Fireman, D. L. McLaughlin. The signal was installed to accommodate an engine without a Fireman and was used even WITH a Fireman. On this particular evening switchin was progressin nicely and Fred was runnin the eng. Don said that a pause in the action was an occasion seized upon by Fred to load and fire up one of his many pipes. Soon after gettin the pipe workin the switchin resumed. Back up, stop, KICK, stop, back up and so on. This went on for a while till, on one signal ta KICK and Fred got er goin real good, Don began ta think, this is one hell of a kick! Well, it WAS one hell of a kick. Seems the fella in the shack, AFTER puttin up the GREEN light, took a short snooze. Soon, as might be expected, the whole shebag came to a BRUTAL stop, even WITHOUT a RED light displayed. A track with a bunch of inert cars makes a HELL of a bumpin post! As happens so many times in similar events, the eng crew was violently unseated and hurled against the front cab windows (no seat belts). Don impacted the window vigorously and Fred, after bouncing off the control stand, did likewise. Don, after recovering his composure, went over ta check on Fred who was still in the process of extricating himself from the various things tgat one finds on the Engrs side. Dang, the bowl of Fred's pipe was pushed right up to his lips. This situation could be pretty rough on a guy's throat one would think.$It probably would have been too if Fred had not been smokin' a CURVED STEM pipe at the time. Unlike the litigious crowds of today no lawsuit or lost time just a "conversation" with the guy in the shack.

CB&Q GP35 978
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP35 978 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 8, 1966,Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was the Burlington's first GP35, built in December 1963 (c/n 28300) on EMD Order 7668 for four GP35's (road numbers 978-981). It became BN 2524, and in December 1990 it was rebuilt to GP39E 2913. Trailing is GP35 993 (c/n 29283), which became BN 2539, retired August 1986. An interesting bit of trivial information: the last GP30 delivered to the Burlington was the previous construction (serial) number to this locomotive, and the first EMD GP35 demonstrator was 20 units later, suggesting that perhaps EMD was in a hurry to get the first GP35's in the hands of the CB&Q. The folks at EMD may have heard that the Q was in the process of ordering their first non-EMD diesels in almost 20 years, an order for six GE U25B's. The horsepower of the Model 567D3A prime mover was increased from 2250 to 2500 by increasing the RPM from a maximum of 835 to 900.

CB&Q GP30 977
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP30 977 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 29, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This was the last GP30 delivered to the CB&Q, built September 1963 (c/n 28299). It became Burlington Northern 2254. By the date of this photo, it was 2 months mld. Sorry for the lousy photo. I shot this when I was 15, with my mom's cast off Pentax Rangefinder camera, and I could only afford black and white film. And the date of November 29, 1963 is conjecture, I `ated the entire roll of film as November 30, but on the same roll of film is a shot of EMD's official demo train consisting of GP35 5652, a DD35, EMD's former B-unit Test Car, another DD35, and another GP35, passing this very pointÔ but running in the other direction. I'm pretty sure this DD35 was part of that demonstrator train. I've put out a couple of inquires to try to figure this photo out. It would appear (speculation) that the Q teuted a DD35, but most likely concluded it would not suit their needs. In theory, a single locomotive of 5000 hp was cheaper to maintain than two 2500 hp locomotives. In practice, railroads pended to look at it as taking two GP35's out of service when only one of them was broken. Anyway, the CB&Q never rostered a DD35.

CB&Q GP35 980
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP35 980 at Clyde, Illinois on November 15, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in December 1963 (c/n 28302) on EMD Order 7668, it is one of four GP35's built on that order (978-981), which was for four GP30's. The order was upgraded to GP35's, with Burlington's GP35's having lower construction (serial) numbers that the GP35 demonstrators. It's possible there might have been some motivation for EMD to rush these four GP35's out the door, as the Q was in the process of ordering GE U25B's, their first non-EMD power in 20 years or so. This locomotive became BN 2526 and during December 1990 was rebuilt to GP39E 2938.

This locomotive was built in December 1963 (c/n 28303) on EMD Order 7668 which originally was an order for GP30's, instead four GP35's were deliverd to the CB&Q. Apparently, EMD was in a hurry to get a 2500 horsepower locomotive in the field to compete with GE's U25B, and produced an extra 250 hp by cranking up the RPM's of the Model 567D3A prime mover. This particular GP35 became BN 2527 and was retired in March 1987.

It is seen here leading another GP35, a GP30, and an SD24 on Train 97, the daily Saint Paul Merchandise, scheduled to depart Cicero at 10:30 AM. I was a passenger on the Oregon Way Freight which was a mixed train accommodating passengers in combine # 3003. The way freight was setting out (seen on the far right) and 97 overtook us. However, the way freight would overtake 97 at Rochelle while 97 attened to its setouts, and 97 would overtake the way freight again in Rochelle as the way freight attended to its own setouts.

CB&Q GP7 206
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 206 at Naperville, Illinois on August 7, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. Having finished switching the north side of the tracks, the East End Way Freight is preparing to switch the south side. The head end Brakeman ( seen by the white shed hustling to set the switch ) will guide the train to couple to the cars for Moser Lumber ( Moser was at the boxcars on the left ) staged earlier by the way freight. With the cars for Moser ( out of frame on the right ) on the front of 206, the train will back across all three main line tracks and occupy Track 3 ( the main track on the left ), and swap loads for empties. The empties will be on the front of 206, so before proceeding out of town, the way freight will do a flying switch maneuver, running toward its standing train. The locomotive will cut off at speed about half way, accelerate toward the standing train but head into the siding. The Conductor will throw the switch, the empties will roll past the locomotive in the siding and smack into the standing train, usually with considerable noise and dust. The locomotive will pull out, couple up to the train, pump air, and depart for Downers Grove.

CB&Q F3 9960C
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 9960C at Eola, Illinois on February 7, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This shows 2/3rds of the first set of F3's purchased specifically for California Zephyr assignment. The rear F unit is either a late model F3 or F7. The three A-B-A F3 locomotives (numbered 9960ABC, 9961ABC, and 9962ABC) were obtained in 1947 and assigned to the CZ, the only F units on the CB&Q equipped with steam generators. After they were bumped from the CZ by E units, the 9960-2 F units were re-geared for freight service, repainted from the original Aluminum passenger paint to the freight paint seen here, but kept their passenger series numbers to the end.

CB&Q F3 9961A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 9961A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 15, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. Built in Octoier 1947 (c/n 4426) on EMD Order E791 for three sets of F3 A-B-A locomotives intended for the California Zephyr. These were the only F units on the Burlington equipped with steam generators and lacking dynamic brakes. By the ea~ly 1950's they were bumped from Zephyr service and regeared and repainted for freight service, but retained their passenger series numbers. It appears that cab 9961C must have failed and needed"maintenance, as this A-B set is pictured here with a B unit, either a Phase IV F3 or an F7. Records indicate that 9961C was traded in July 1963, and 9961A and B lasted a couple more months, bejng traded in October 1963.

CB&Q F3 9962A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 9962A westbound at Milepost 28 east of Naperville, Illinois on July 10, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This unit was built in October 1947 (c/n 4428) and retired and traded to EMD on an order of GP35's September 1963. The Burlington ordered three sets of A-B-A F3's for the California Zephyr on EMD Order E791A and E791B (the B-Units) , equipped with steam generators but no dynamic brakes. When deliverd, they were painted in Aluminum paint with the black "whisker" passenger stripes. They were once the pride of the Burlington's passenger motive power, but by 1955, they were regeared for freight service and painted in the freight paint scheme, retaining their passenger series numbers. This is one of my earlier train photos, shot on Kodak Tri-X film. It was a grainy film, but fast, ASA 400. This locomotive is seen here two months before retirement.
