Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP30 971 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on February 6, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in May 1963 (c/n 28293) on EMD Order 7652, it became BN 2248 and was retired in January 1985. Eight GP30's were built on EMD Order 7652 (#'s 970-977), and they were Phase II GP30's. At the request of the UP, EMD added a 10 inch cab extension on this side (the left, or Fireman's side) to better accommodate the crew, thus creating a Phase II GP30. The spotting feature of the extended cab is the lack of a stanchion behind the cab at the bend in the handrail. Complete GP30 Phase rosters can be found in the July 1989 Mainline Modeler Magazine, page 53. Note the second freight car in the consist is a tri-level auto rack loaded with new automobiles, to which the CB&Q is applying a liberal coat of diesel exhaust. |
