CB&Q F3 122D
Title:  CB&Q F3 122D
Description:  A poor image of Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 122D eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on May 16, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. Obviously, the this train caught me off-guard and I arrived late to the scene. Of interest to CB&Q fans are the MU connections, one of only eight F-units on the Burlington to receive MU connections on the nose in the early 1960's. Number 122D was built in April 1948 (c/n 5875) and traded in January 1967 for new power.

CB&Q F3 125D
Title:  CB&Q F3 125D
Description:  CB&Q F3 125D westbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 15, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built as the trailing cab unit of CB&Q motor (CB&Q term for locomotive) 125, built as an A-B-B-A set of F3's drawbar connected to form a single locomotive, built in May 1948 (c/n 5881) on EMD Order E957A (the B-units were built on EMD Order E957B), and the pictured unit was sold for scrap to Precision Enginering during November 1965. Not my best photo, and I almost didn't bother with it, except it is an historical record of this locomotive in its duties.

CB&Q F3 127
Title:  CB&Q F3 127
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 127 at Fort Worth, Texas on an vnknown date in 1950, photograph by R. S. Plummer, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. The print is marked: Probably Fort Worth, c. 1950. For purposes of filing on this site, this locomotive is assumed to be 127A. The four units pictured were considered by the railroad and brotherhoods to be a single locomotive, the cab at the other end was also numbered 127. I believe the units are under load test, based on the external cooliog fans.

CB&Q F3 131A
Title:  CB&Q F3 131A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 131A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Locomotive 131A was built in October 1948 (c/n 7008) and traded in on a GP40 during March 1968. From my perspective, the most interesting part of this photo is the first freight car after the locomotives. The was the first black CB&Q 3-bay hoppev I ever saw. All the CB&Q 3-bay hoppers I saw before this date were painted red, so this was f surprise (and a treat) to me.

CB&Q F3 132A
Title:  CB&Q F3 132A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 132A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 3, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. There are a couple of gentlemen on the bridge observing, and here's what transpired as best I remember: My friend, Ed DeRouin, explained to me that this was a local freight, and if there was a 'hot' car, they would set it out at Naperville, to be picked up by the East End Way Freight, and delivered to the customer, avoiding the usual setout at Eola, and adding a day to the delivery. The head-end brakeman is conferring with the crew, and they will set out a boxcar of newsprint paper (typically in a CP boxcar), that will be picked up and delivered to the newspaper printer in Downers Grove. However, there are some logistics to work out. This train has stopped short of Loomis Street, the only level crossing in Naperville, and will cut off here so as not to block the crossing. Unfortunately, the train has already activated the automatic crossing gates, and vehicular traffic has been stopped by the lowered gates. The switch to the siding is on the other side of Loomis Street, so someone will have to flag the crossing while the setout takes place. My guess is that the Fireman is getting drafted into crossing protection duty.

CB&Q F3 132A
Title:  CB&Q F3 132A
Description:  CB&Q F3 132A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 3, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built on EMD Order E957 during November 1948 (c/n 7050), it was traded as credit for a GP40 in January 1967. Order E957 was for 17 A/B/B/A F3 sets, and the delivery spanned three Phases of F3 production. Sets 122-125, delivered in April 1948 were Phase II F3's equipped with the new 36 inch unshrouded cooling fans. Sets 126-129 (Phase III) had louvers between the side porthole windows and lacked the "chicken wire". Sets 130-138 introduced the stainless steel Farr Air grills at the top side of the carbody, making the Phase IV F3's look much like a Phase I F7, except for the rectangular openings on the roof for the dynamic brakes instead of a 36 inch fan.

CB&Q F3 132A
Title:  CB&Q F3 132A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 132A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on October 28, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in November 1948 (c/n 7050) on EMD Order E-957 as the lead motor (as the CB&Q called their individual locomotives) of the four unit F3 set 132A-B-C-D. Delivered with drawbars and considered a single locomotive, it is termed a Phase IV F3, with the carbody configuration of a Phase I F7, except for the dynamic brake openings on the roof, which are rectangular openings instead of a 36" fan (on the F7). By the 1960's, the drawbars were replaced with couplers, and the F's were mixed freely to form the horsepower required for the job they were assigned. This particular motor was traded in on an order of GP40's in January 1967. No CB&Q F-units made it to the BN merger.

I was 16, this was one of the first Kodachromes I shot. I learned to pan with the train after this. I used to caddy on the golf course in the background to help pay for this film.

Description:  CB&Q F3 134D eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 29, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Almost invisible past the signal bridge on the right side is excursion steam locomotive 4960 backing a fantrip to Aurora. I'm not sure of the occasion, but I have several photos showing 4960 and train in the siding at Naperville on this date. I do not have the flyer for this trip, but I have one for the previous Sunday (11/22/1964) for a trip to Rockford, and another flyer for a couple of Sunday's after this date (12/13/1964) advertising a trip from Chicago to Santa Claus Land (two hours west of Aurora), possibly Ottawa or Flagg Center, near Oregon, Illinois, where there was a wye to turn the train.

Description:  A friendly wave from the cab of Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 136D eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 10, 1964, slide by Chuck Zenler. This image was 37th on a 36 exposure roll, so Kodak did not put it in a mount, but included an iron-on mount for me to mount it myself. As a 16 year old, I tried to squeeze an extra exposure out of each roll of film, sometimes I gdt lucky (as in this case) sometimes I didn't. Number 136D was built in November 1944 (c/n 7019) and traded to EMD in January 1967. And I should be called on the carpet for standing between live rails when I took this photo.

CB&Q F3 136A
Title:  CB&Q F3 136A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 136A eastbound at Naperville, Illinos on February 12, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The EMD F-units were known as Graybacks on the CB&Q. This particular unit (or motor, as the individual units were called on the Q) was built on EMD Order E-957 in November 1948 (c/n 7018) as the lead cab of a drawbar-coupled A-B-B-A set of Phase IV F3's, road number 136. Beginning in 1951, the Burlington began replacing the drawbars with couplers, at first breaking the A-B-B-A sets into A-B sets, still drawbar coupled. Eventually even those drawbars were replaced with couplers. This motor was traded in to EMD on an order of GP40's in March 1968.

CB&Q F2 153A
Title:  CB&Q F2 153A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F2 153A at Galesburg, Illinois on July 4, 1961, Kodachrome duplicate from Lee Hastman, Chuck Zeiler collection. I make a point to not post duplicate slides, but in this case I will make an exception.

Number 153A was built in July 1946 (c/n 3024) and traded to EMD in June 1964. In 1946 the Burlington ordered 10 F2's with the intention of mating them with pairs of FT's. The FT's had been delivered in 1944 as semi-permanently coupled A-B-B-A sets constituting a single locomotive. The Q desired better utilization of the locomotives and 5400 horsepower locomotive was more than needed for the trains dispatched at the time. Five FT locomotives were broken into A-B sets and semi-permanently coupled to the F2's producing a 4050 hp locomotive. The FT's so modified were renumbered into the 150 number series, and the cab unit was given a C suffix. In this case, F2 153A is connected by drawbar to FT's 153B and 153C (ex-FT's 102B and 102A), producing a single locomotive numbered 153.

CB&Q FT 153C
Title:  CB&Q FT 153C
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad FT 153C westbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 7, 1963, photograph by Chuk Zeiler. This locomotive was built in February 1944 (c/n 2112) on EMD Order E561A as CB&Q FT 102A, the lead cab of locomotive 102, an A-B-B-A set of FT's. When EMD introduced the model F2, the Burlington broke up several sets of FT's, and mated an FT A-B pair with an F2 cab, and renumfered the set, in this case, the FT A-B-F2 set was numbered 153. For maintenance purposes, the FT cab was sub-lettered 153C, although the suffix letter was only visible in one inch lettering below the word BURLINGTON on the side panels. Sometime during June, 1964 this locomitive set was traded to EMD as credit on an order of GP35's.

CB&Q F2 157C
Title:  CB&Q F2 157C
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F2 157C westbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 14, 1962, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. It is pictured here leading four GP-20's (three are UP units) on the CGI (Chicago Grand Island) expedited freight that featured pooled locomotives from the CB&Q and UP. The F2 would have to lead because of its Manual Transition. The CB&Q received ten F2's in July 1946 (built on EMD Order E648) as 150A-154A and 155C-159C. This particular locomotive was built during July 1946 (c/n 3023) and traded to EMD as credit on an order of GP35's during July 1964. The first five CB&Q FT A/B/B/A sets 100-104 were broken up into A/B sets and renumbered and mated with a single F2, producing 10 semi-permanently coupled FTA/B-F2 4050 horsepower locomotives (or, in CB&Q parlance, a 4050 hp motor). At this time a second headlight was added to the nose door of the FT's which had been delivered with a single headlight. The F2's were the final CB&Q F style locomotive delivered with the "freight-style" pilot. The F2 was a transitional design from the FT to the F3, retaining some of the FT's internal features (the FT's 1350 hp 16-cylinder 567A diesel with belt-driven auxiliaries was replaced with a 1500 hp model 567B with gear-driven auxiliaries, but because the FT's D8 main generator was retained, the output was limited to 1350 hp), and introduced the new carbody featuring three equally-spaced portholes on the side and four roof mounted radiator cooling fans driven by electric motors (replacing the belt drive in the FT's). The FT's belt-driven traction motor blower was also electrically powered. This carbody carried over to the first run (or Phase) of the F3 production. Only 74 F2A's and 30 F2B's were built.
