FM. Here is an image of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in August of 1948. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5831 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as 3,000 horsepower BP-60's for passenger service, but later regeared and downgraded to 2,500 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service #5831 was constructed in January of 1948 and retired in September of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, they're pulling a passenger train around the Curve on its way down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. This image comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa. William E. Burket Collection. |

Here is a photo from the C.P. Munck Collection. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5831 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Dziobko. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by John Dziobko, Jr., that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1952. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5831 and #5826. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as 3,000 horsepower BP-60's for passenger service, later regeared and downgraded to 2,500 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service, and retired in September of 1962. #5831 was constructed in January of 1948, while #5826 was built in September of 1948. They're waiting for their next helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back. Also visible in the background (L to R) are part of the 7th Street Bridge, a conical sanding tower, a concrete coaling station, as well as portions of the PRR's Passenger Car Shops. |

DMP-2. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken near Pinecroft, Pennsylvania, on 2 May 1959. Pulling a westbound freight at the left are (R to L) Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9609 and #9617; both are AF-16's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,600 horsepower each. Pulling an eastbound freight are (L to R) PRR engines #5812 and #5831; both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and rated at 2,500 each. (#4 of 20) |
