Nashville & Western job NE05 pauses at next to the Merle Haggard Mural on the side of the building at 2401 Clifton Ave. on the northwest side of Nashville. The train is the small remaining western portion of the Tennessee Central's Nashville Belt Line. The belt line split off from the TC's Eastern Division and Southern Jct. and ran along the southern edge of what was then the city limits of Nashville, tunneling under the N.C.&St.L's Nashville to Chattanooga main near the State Fairgrounds, crossing the L & N's Nashville to Birmingham main at Vine Hill, and crossing the N.C.&St.L.'s Nashville to Bruceton main line on a bridge near the site of the N&C's Nashville Shops just west of this location. The portion of the belt line between Vine Hill and Charlotte Ave. was abandoned following the TC's bankruptcy in 1968 and the right of way was used for Interstate 440. |
