Here is a photo by H.W. Pontin via Rail Photo Service that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1940. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6853, an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during September of 1926 and retired in April of 1950 after 24 years of faithful service. In this context, it's passing the Kittanning Point Station with a nine-car passenger train that's about to round the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Johnstown and points West. Photo taken from four-track Signal Bridge #2416/7. John S. Fisher Collection; #3 of 14. |
