ARB. Here is an original photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in October of 1955. Prominent here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5818 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5818 was built in January of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. The road numbers of the other locomotives pictured here and the exact date are not recorded. Photo taken from the 8th Street Bridge in Juniata. |
