Two generations of equipment share time together in the depot. A battle-scarred GP40 with nearly 50 years running and millions of miles of both freight and passenger experience from Penn Central, Conrail and NJ Transit rumbles away on Track 3 with the new generation of equipment staring it down from a distance. For now these tired old soldiers continue to provide service but for how much longer? With every passing year the equipment on New Jersey's commuter lines becomes less and less diverse. These tired old geeps won't be around forever. Especially with a recent announcement that NJ Transit has ordered an additional 17 ALP45 dual-modes from Bombardier. It feels like just last week I was coming to work in Hoboken for an afternoon assignment to a house with a dozen or more of them rumbling away ready for their westbound journey to wherever. |
