Tom Beckett	General	There are a few problems with getting one of these magnificent engines restored and operating. Two big ones off the bat: first, the NEC is now 25,000 volts AC; the G's run on 11,000 volts. There are also hazardous material issues with the transformers, which use oil made from polychlorinated biphenyls(PCB's), whose leakage and disposal was a serious environmental issue at the end of their careers. Those two things doomed the G's more than anything else. There are enough of them around(upward of a dozen) that parts could probably be found to get several running, if it were possible. The last ones were retired by NJ Transit in 1983, so there are people still working for NJT who worked on them in regular service. For what it's worth, they ran hard on NJT right up to the end, including Tuscan painted 4877. In 1982, I had a girlfriend in Red Bank NJ, and used to take the train there routinely. I can recall the NY bound train coming up to the main at Union tower in Rahway, and pulling away f	10/11/2017 4:18:55 AM
