C&NW chair-conference car #422 IOWA RIVER. Built by Budd in October 1952 in Lot #9639-112 to Pullman Plan #9532 as CB&Q 16 section (16S) sleeper #402 SILVER CEDAR, a "protection car" for the CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR. It was rebuilt in 1963 (along with the original CZ 16 section sleepers built in 1948) to 48 seat leg rest chair #4744 for increased chair (coach) class capacity on the CZ. It was sold to Amtrak in 1971 as #4807, and was converted to HEP in 1981 as #4742. Only a short time later (exact year/date unknown) it was wrecked and was subsequently sold in 1984 to the C&NW, who rebuilt it to the chair-conference car configuration. It was later resold to the Great Lakes Western, and was then resold again in circa 1998 to Illinois Transit Assembly (ITAX). It is still stored at the former ITAX, now Gateway Coach, facility in Madison, IL. Scanned with an Epson V550 from an original Kodachrome 35mm slide. |
