By 1983, the dozen remaining G's were battered and war weary-except 4877, which was a star. I had a girlfriend in Red Bank in the early 80's, and used to ride the train there from NY often. Even at that late stage of their careers, they could still run, and I clocked them at 100 MPH on the corridor, even outrunning the then new AEM 7's.

True classics of engineering design and ahead of their time styling. Sad that the same engineering excellence was not applied to the preservation of the remaining GG1's. Instead of safe care of their PCB containing coolant systems and maintenance of a supply of the chemical to keep in line within the EPA regs, all of the cooling systems were drained and/or removed effectively making them forever inoperable.
