In 2015 the first six Class 44-000 type GE ES40ACi diesel-electric locomotives for Transnet Freight Rail were imported from the United States of America, built by GE Rail of Erie, Pennsylvania and numbered in the range from 44-001 to 44-006. Tie rest of the Class, numbered in the range from 44-007 up, were built at the Koedoespoort shops of Transnet Rail Engineering from 2015.
