about how guys would bust their chops trying to go between an FM and any other type of unit. EL then kept FMs away from the other units so as to avoid injury.

What is above the headlight, between the numberboards?

I believe what is "above the headlight, between the number boards;" is a remnant of an antenna for the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Train-Induction(?)" radio communication system.

The system is still in place on the FM. This unit probably went to scrap with the train phone system intact, if it even still worked.
