Number 704 was built in March 1948 as EJ&E 104 (c/n 73712), originally equipped with two Baldwin 606SC (SC = Super Charged, utilizing an Elliot BF-34 turbocharger) six-cylinder diesel prime movers. It was rebuilt during December 1960 by EJ&E and the 606SC's were replaced with 606A's. The 606A's improvements over the 606SC included a newly-designed Elliot H-503 turbocharger, new web plates to improve alignment between the prime mover and main generator, heavier and dynamically-balanced crankshaft and conndcting rods, improved lubrication, and new mounting points to reduce operating shocks, and resulting in an increase in horsepower from 1000 (606SC) to 1325 (606A), pretty good for six cylinders. This unit was retired in February 197< and traded to EMD. |

It was repowered during January 1958 with new Baldwin Model 606A prime movers replacing the original Model 606SC units. It was retired and sold to EMD in February 1970. Between 1956 and 1960, 14 DT66-2000's were repowered by EMD (and renumered into the 900 series), 11 were repowered by the EJ&E using new Baldwin diesels (renumbered into the 700 series), and two DT66-2000's were never repowered (#'s 100 and 118). As originally built, the radiator intake was located just above the frame (a plate covers the original opening) but was moved up to accommodate Baldwin's re-designed cooling system. |

Although I was 18 years old when I shot this photo, this was the location of my first employment as a paperboy when I was seven. This is where my paper route began. One thing for sure, there was a lot of noise when the EJ&E crossed the C&NW, especially with short wheelbase freight cars. I talked to Bob Fox, a guy I know who worked in that tower. He did not have fond memories of his experience in that tower. Apparently, all was quiet in the tower one very early morning (about 2:00 AM or so) when the buzzer sounded and an EJ&E transfer run asked for permission to cross. Bob didn't see any C&NW trains asking for permission, so he allowed the EJ&E train to cross. Even in the best of conditions, the EJ&E train, which at this point was in Service Brake application, would have taken some time to get up to speed, maybe 10 mph, to cross the C&NW. According to Bob, as soon as the EJ&E train occupied the circuit, the buzzer went off again; a C&NW train asking for permission to cross. Then another. Before he knew what happened another C&NW train was asking for permission, and Bob was tieing up three C&NW trains, and the EJ&E train hadn't even hit the diamonds. Bob had to answer to both the EJ&E and C&NW dispatchers. He quit the railroad business a couple of weeks later. |

EJ&E Baldwin/EMD DT-6-6-2000 921 at Joliet, Illinois on February 13, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 921 was built by Baldwin in August 1948 (c/n 73729) as EJ&E 121. Originally powered by two Baldwin Model 606SC diesels with Westinghouse electrical gear, it was repowered by EMD in April 1957 with two 567C prime movers. However, because of the Westinghouse electrical gear, which was reused, the prime movers could not produce the full 1200 horsepower at 800 rpm, but were limited to 625 rpm to protect the main generators from flashng over. This had a side effect of being hard of the 567C's which suffered from poor lubrication and overheating. Eventually adjustments were made and the repowering proved to be a tolerable success. The EMD hoods were tapered at the bottom to fit the narrow Baldwin frame, and special handrail stanchions were fashioned to allow space for the passage of personnel around the wider hoods. This unit was retired in July 1976. |
