CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-3 5330
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-3 5330 presumed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on an unknown day in June 1917, photograph by Baldwin Locomoive Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5330 was built by Baldwin in June 1917 (c/n 45756) and sold for scrap in November 1953. The following is from the book, Steam Locomotives Of The Burlington Route, by Bernard G. Corbin and William F. Kerka: The O-3 2-8-2 types were a modification of the O-2 engines. Sixty engines of the O-3 Class were built by Baldwin over the period extending from 1915 to 1919. They were assigned to the road as No. 5300 - 5359. Although the fist fifteen O-3 engines, built in 1915, were equipped with alligator-type crossheads, the subsequent O-3 Mikados were all fitted with those of the Laird type. Accessories on the Class O-3 locomotives, when first built, included a combustion chamber, a brick arch in the firebox, a Schmidt-type superheater, and a Street automatic stoker. In later year the O-3 engines were modified with shorter engine cabs, the single-stage air compressors were replaced with cross-compound tpes, and feedwater heating systems of either the Worthington or Elesco types were applied to many.

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-3 5333
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-3 5333 in the dead line at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in December 1957, photograph by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5333 was built in June 1917 ( c/n 45764 ) and retired in December 1957. The class O-3 was a modified design of the earlier class O-2 engines. Sixty engines of the O-3 class were built by Baldwin from 1915 to 1919. They were assigned road numbers 5300 - 5359. Although the first 15 O-3 engines, built in 1915, were equipped with alligator-type crossheads, the subsequent O-3 Mikados were all fittted with Laird-type crossheads, reducing reciprocating weight. Accessories on the class O-3 locomotives, when first built, included a combustion chamber, a brick arch in the firebox, a Schmidt-type superheater, and a Street automatic stoker. In later years, the O-3 engines were modified with shorter cabs, the single stage air compressors were replaced with cross-compound types, and feedwater-heating systems of either the Worthington or Elesco types were applied to many. Some of the O-3's were fitted with exhaust steam injectors, and a few others had Coffin feedwater heaters mounted on the front of their smokeboxes. It appears that this particular locomotive did acquire a Boxpok main driver. I wish I could speak about the tender design.

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-3 5357
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-3 5357 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in July 1956, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built by Baldwin in April 1919 (c/n 51742), sold for scrap in November 1960, this was one of 60 class O-3 2-8-2 locomotives delivered between 1915 and 1919, road numbers 5300-5359. The first 15 were built with alligator-type crossheads, the subsequent O-3's were equipped with Laird-type crossheads. Originally equipped with a Street automatic stoker, they were later equipped with either the Duplex or Standard MB stokers. The single stage air compressors were replaced with cross-compound pumps. Feedwater heaters were eventually installed on the O-3's, either the Coffin, Elesco, or Worthington BL types.

Milwaukee Road in Kansas City
Description:
CMStP&P L-2 class Mikado 8255 sits by the road's Coburg roundhouse in 1936 in this shot by Charles Winters. The L-2 was a freight standard for the Milwaukee Road; the road acquiring 380 from Alco, Baldwin and its own shops from 1912 through 1923. 8255 came out of Baldwin in 1920 and would later be renumbered as 555. The L-2 class was the largest Milwaukee steam power on their KC line for years; as of 1944 they were rated for 3250 tons eastbound to the first crew change point, at Laredo and only 2250 westbound.

PRR 8426, L-1S, 1955
Description:
Miscellany. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Philip R. Hastings that was taken in Renovo, Pennsylvania, in September of 1955. Photo Caption: "Pennsylvania 2-8-2 No. 8426 at Renovo, Pennsylvania." Shown here is PRR engine #8246, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as number "7248" during December of 1916 and renumbered "8426" in February of 1919. In his context, it's being prepared by Renovo workers for stationary steam supply duty at Sunnyside Yard in Queens, New York. This involved converting the boiler to burn fuel oil, removing the main driving rods, and repainting both the engine and its tender. Also note the GM-EMD F-3's in the mid-distance. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam In Indian Summer" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (772-53).
