CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 westbound at Aurora, Illinois on July 4, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. I didn't have enough sense to save the flyer from this trip, so I don't know the destination. The consist was: 4960, C&S auxiliary tender 99518, CB&Q mill gondola 197193, a heavyweight coach, a heavyweight diner, three bi-level commuter coaches, a 7300 series single level coach/power car, another heavyweight coach, and another mill gondola. As I recall, safety railings were welded to the diaphrams of the heavyweight coaches to permit safe passage from the gondolas to the rest of the train. |

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 westbound at Aurora, Illinois on July 4, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Once upon a time, you could ride behind a coal burning steam locomotive, and not complain because you got a cinder in the eye. Most of the gentlemen in the gondola are wearing goggles, and from personal experience, I can attest that this was required eyewear for a fantrip like this. You were also shampooing cinders out of your scalp fo the next few days if you didn't wear a hat. |

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 22, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a bit unusual to see a solid train of stainless steel coaches on a fantrip. My notes indicate this was a trip to Rockford, Illinois. On the rear is the Silver Solarium, the spare dome-observation from the California Zephyr pool. |

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 at Naperville, Illinois on November 29, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a steam special for local school children. Earlier the special picked up the chldren and left Naperville westbound to an unknown destination. Upon return, the childern were unloaded, and the train backed from Naperville to Aurora as seen in this photo. This locomotive had a steam leak on this side for a short period of time. |

In addition to mainline fan trips, the CB&Q also offered school children specials. Here is one special in the siding at Naperville on a dreary day awaiting the arrival of the school children in Naperville. |

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 5, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. About a mile behind this scene to the west was River Road. At the time of this photo, River Road was not heavily traveled, and warranted only crossbucks to protect motorists. All trains would signal the usual two longs - one short - one long, crossing signal, giving me a moment to decide if I should grab my camera. Of course, a steam whistle instead of a horn is reason enough to get the camera and get out in the cold. Here is 4960 running light eastbound, likely heading for a fantrip assignment out of Chicago. I have no information about that trip, although I have a flyer for the trip the following week, December 13, a Santa Claus Special from Chicago to "Santa Claus Land" and return. I have no idea where Santa Claus Land was, but it was two hours out of Aurora, and would have been a place where the train (or at least, the locomotive) could have been turned. However, on this day the CB&Q gave me an early Christmas present, my very own personal photo runby. |
