PRR 5832, BH-50, 1953
Title:  PRR 5832, BH-50, 1953
Description:  Lorenz. Here is a photo via Bob Lorenz that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 22 August 1953. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5832 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5832 was constructed in February of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, they're ascending the Allegheny Mountains and rounding the Curve with a mixed-cargo freight train bound for the Conway Yards. The deep burbling sound of their motors echoes off of the Mountains for 15 minutes before the train actually navigates the Curve! (Gift from Brad Mann.)
