This B&O class EM-1 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomoitves behemouths builot by Baldwin in 1943 & 1944 (B&O says 1944 & 1945) were the last articulated steam locomotives built for the B&O. Actually, the B&O did not want the EM-1s. Instead they wanted diesels. However, because of restrictions imposed by the War Production Board, the EM-1s were delivered from Baldwin in 1943 (7600 - 7619) and 1944 (7620 - 7629). Specs - 64" drivers, 235 psi, 24"x32" cylinders, engine weight of 628,700 lb and tractive effort of 115,000 lb. All were scrapped by 1960. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo so "guess"-timations were used. |
