CRI&P E3A 625 |
Description: |
CRI&P E3A 625 at the Rocket House, 47th Street, Chicago, Illinois, June 13, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built by EMC in July 1939 (c/n 934) on Order E245A for two E3A's, (625 and 626), both traded to EMD in September 1969. They were built for the Fall 1939 inaguration of the new lightweight Rocky Mountain Rocket, replacing the steam powered Rocky Mountain Limited. The original trainset was a partially articulated Budd built three car trainset pulled by a EMC TA model locomotive, expanded to a seven car Budd-Pullman built mix (November 12, 1939), requiring more horsepower, thus the two E3's. Note the taper at the rear of the carbody to match the roofline of the Budd cars. |

Description: |
CRI&P E3A 625 at the 47th Street coach yard, Chicago, Illinois, June 13, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built by EMC in July 1939 (c/n 934), on EMC Order E245A for two E3A's (625 and 626). These two E3's were intended for the new Rocky Mountain Rocket. Only 17 E3A's were built, and only two E3B's. Rock Island's units survived until traded to EMD in September 1969. There's a nice as-built image at the RITS web site: http://www.rits.org/www/equipment/dieselpix/rmr.gif |
