Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad PMC (Passenger Motor Car) 9730 at an unknown location (best guess, Lincoln, NE) on an unknown date, photo by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. I based the location on locations typical of Dick Rumbolz, from whom I purchased the negative of this photo. The date is based on the scrapping date as listed in the book, Burlington In Transition, by Bernard G. Corbin and Joseph C. Hardy. Number 9730 was built by Pullman in August 1928 as CB&Q 730. It was powered by an EMC Winton 275 horsepower gasoline engine (serial 297). In June 1930 it was renumbered to 9730. It was scrapped (according to the book) in February 1955. At least two former gas-electrics were turned into crew locker rooms at yards around the system by removing the trucks and dropping them down where convenient.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad class PMC (Passenger Motor Car) 9735 at Macomb, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1960, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. The body was built by Pullman in March 1929 as CB&Q 735, it was renumbered 9735 in April 1930, classed as ED-3-C in CB&Q documents. Pullman fabricated the carbody, giving it their builder's number 6203. Electro-Motive Corporation added the electrical and mechanical components and affixed their builder's number 343. Its original gasoline engine was probably rated at 275 h.p. In 1949, 9735 was upgraded to a 400 h.p. Lima-Hamilton diesel engine, although a drawing published in Bernard Corbin's book, "The Burlington In Transition" specifies an Electro-Motive 400 h.p. power plant. Sometime after June 1952, the boxy radiator over the cab was replaced by a smooth hump in the roof. Most of the 50's and 60's it spent in Illinois towns like Galesburg, Bushnell, and Macomb. Although many PMC's had passenger seating, 9735 never did - its interior is entirely devoted to a 30 foot baggage section and 15 foot mail apartment, and a 15 foot power/control section. Photos of other PMC's show them pulling standard coaches for extra capacity. CB&Q PMC's have also been photographed puling short freight trains and pushing wedge plows to clear snow drifts. Number 9735 was retired in 1967, the last operating CB&Q PMC, and was sold to Southern Industrial in June of 1969. It was acquired by the Minnesota Transportation Museum in 1984.

Built in 1930, body by Pullman power unit Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC) No. 148, 400 hp gasoline engine, two 200 gallon fuel tanks, one water tank of 125 gallons. The following is from the book, Burlington In Transition, by Bernard Corbin and Joseph Hardy:

Like most self propelled cars, the 9767 had a varied an interesting career, though perhaps more distinguished than most. In her late years, she was painted a distinctive silver gray and pulled one of the finest riding cars on the system, the Silver Pendulum, between Saint Joseph, Missouri, and Brookfield, where the train connected with the Kansas City Zephyr. When this passenger travn was discontinued both the 9767 and the Silver Pendulum were moved to Lincoln, Nebraska to become the Lincoln - Saint Joseph via Wymore Local passenger. Motor failure due to a broken connecting rod did severe damage to the diesel motor and the 9767 was taken out of service in December 1961. The PMC body was set on the ground at Beardstown, Illinois to seve as an engineman's locker room.

Motor failure due to a broken connecting rod did severe damage to the diesel and the 9767 was taken out of service in December 1961. The PMC body was set on the ground at Beardstown, Illinois to serve as an enginemen's locker room. However the Silver Pendulum, built in 1941, saw more service.

Another workhorse was the 400 h.p. 9768 which, after the end of steam, became the prime mover on the Sterling, Colorado - Cheyenne, Wyoming branch line. Equipped with footboards fore and aft, she did all the switching at the 10 stations of the 108 mile run, and even bucked huge snowdrifts ion the winter. She could handle up to eight loaded freight cars westbound, climbing over a thousand feet. When her motors wore out she was replaced with small road switchers.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad PMC (Passenger Motor Car) 9769 at Hastings, Nebraska on July 13, 1960, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 9769 was completed in October 1930, body built by Pullman-Standard, equipped with a six cylinder 400 horsepower gasoline engine built by Electro-Motive Corporation ( serial number 460 ), and the electrical equipment was supplied by Westinghouse. It had controls at both ends and a 15 foot mail apartment. Although it contained no passenger accommodations, it was capable of pulling five or six cars. It was re-powered with a diesel engine at an unknown date. In its final years on the CB&Q it was assigned to yard engine duty. In February 1966 it was sold to Southern Industrial Railroad, Centerville, Iowa.

This was one of four PMC's ordered by the CB&Q in 1930 from Pullman, powered by EMC. Originally built as gas-electric's, the four PMC's were numbered 9767-9770. This particular PMC was converted to diesel-electric, date unknown, using a 400 horsepower diesel prime mover supplied by Electro-Motive Corporation. It was sold for scrap during August 1966.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad PMC 9772 at Peoria, Illinois on August 31, 1957, photographer unknown ( likely Lou Schmitz ), Chuck Zeiler collection. Built as Baggage-Passenger class PMC (Passenger Motor Car) Number 570 (2nd) by Electro-Motive Corporation - Saint Louis Car Company in November 1928 (Winton-EMC gasoline engine c/n 299), it was renumbered to 9570 in May 1930. It was originally powered by a Winton 275 horsepower gasoline engine supplied by EMC. At an unknown date this unit was rebuilt to Mail-Passenger configuration, renumbered 9772, and received a 400 horsepower diesel power plant, possibly a Hamilton product. It remained in service until sold for scrap during August 1966.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad class PMC (Passenger Motor Car) 9772 near Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in February 1962, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. In tow is coach number 6000, named 'Silver Pendulum', an orphan in the Q's passenger department. It was built by Pacific Railway Equipment Company in 1942, one of three built ( the Great Northern and Santa Fe also each got one). Its suspension was as its name implies; the car would swing like a pendulum in curves similar to a Talgo train. However, this did not play well with other cars so the car spent its final years in the service pictured.

The first 570 was built in May 1927 (EMC # 209), renumbered 835, renumbered again in January 1928 to 9835, sold in October 1936 to Alabama Tennesse & Northern as AT&N 51. The car pictured was 2nd 570, built in November 1928 (EMC # 299), renumbered 9570 in May 1930, renumbered again on December 1933 to 9772. At an unknown date it was converted to diesel electric (the fuel tank is stenciled DIESEL FUEL), and sold for scrap in August 1966.

An unfortunate shadow, or perhaps an unfortunate spotting of the gas-electric, at least from a photographic point of view. This photo shows the E unit painted in the as-delivered black "whisker" stripes on the nose. This was the first E8 delivered to the CB&Q (c/n 9674), built in December 1949, retired and sold for scrap Mxy 28, 1975. All the CB&Q E8's and E9's were delivered with black "whiskers", and it was not until 1959 that the red "whiskers" were first applied. This E8 also shows the coupler covers (in the open position) applied to the E's and subsequently removed.

My only choice on this site was Pullman-Standard as the builder and ACMU as the model. Neither is entirely correct. The body was built July 1928 by Pullman Car (In 1934 Pullman Car & Manufacturing merged with Standard Steel Car Co. to form the Pullman-Standard Car Manufacturing Company). It was delivered as number 845 and renumbered in 1930, when the 275 horsepower gasoline engine was replaced with a diesel from Electro-Motive Corporation. It was classed as a PMC on the CB&Q, (Passenger Motor Car) and finally scrapped in August 1961. Hand written on the slide mount was a notation that this is Train #30, which may or may not be correct. I recall train #30 being a Denver to Billings train, but I'm working from both memory (not always accurate) and a 1965 timetable. According to the 1965 timetable, Train #85 ran on Tuesday and Friday (9/24/1957 was a Tuesday) between St. Joseph, Missouri and Creston, Iowa, arriving in Maryville at 12:05 PM. The following is a comment from Brian Woodruff (thanks, Brian), which helps clarify the train number: "I have a 1954 Official Guide which does show the Creston to St. Joseph motor train as No. 30. While the Guide also lists a Billings to Denver train No. 30, that was technically a Colorado & Southern train. Also, in 1954, train No. 30 was due in Maryville at 8:55 am, and I'm thinking the length of the shadows in your pic look more like 9 AM than noon."

Gas-electrics were classed as PMC (Passenger Motor Car) by the Burlington, although drawings of this number series also show Class ED-3B. This particular PMC was built in July 1928 as 845, body by Pullman, power plant by Electro-Motive Corporation (c/n 279) driving Westinghouse electrical gear. The number 9 was prefixed to all the PMC numbers in the 1930's, and thus this one became 9845. Originally powered by a EMC Model 120 - 275 horsepower gasoline engine coupled to a DC generator, the power plant was later replaced with a 400 hp diesel. This PMC was scrapped in August 1961.

Built April 7, 1934 (ordered June 17, 1933) by Budd (c/n 509), powered by an EMC Winton eight-cylinher Model 201A diesel (original block was s/n 4510, now at the Smithsonian, replaced around 1937 with block s/n 4686) , it is seen here in one of its many configuratUons during its service life. Originally a three car train (power unit, baggage/coach, coach/observation) it was re-equipped in late-1934 by adding chair car 525, re-equipped again Tn 1937 with car 500 (40 chair seats and a buffet/pantry/kitchen) replacing 525. Another modification was to move the air horns from behind the intake grills (which were directed downward, to the annoyance of the engine crew) to the roof top. Between 1946-48, the Zephyr (officially re-named the Pioneer Zephyr November 11, 1936) acquired the Mars Light above the headlight. It was regularly assigned to Omaha-Kansas City routes until retired in 1960 and donated to Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. Between 1994-1998, the Pioneer Zephyr was cosmetically restored to as-built appearance and the Mars Light was removed. The four yellow hash marks seen below the cab window are service marks (one hash mark for each five years of service) applied by the Burlington during the late-1940's. It will shortly receive a fifth hash mark just before retirement.
