CB&Q NE-10 13515
Title:  CB&Q NE-10 13515
Description:  CB&Q Class NE-10 13515 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 15, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Sorry about the motion blur, this one caught me off-guard. The NE-10's were the CB&Q's first all steel waycars (caboose) , a group of 25 (#'s 13500-13524) were built at the Burlington's Aurora, Illinois car shops, the last waycars built at Aurora. All previous waycars were of steel uwderframe, wood body construction. These were the only steel waycars to see extensive use with steam power. This particular waycar was built in March, 1930 and became BN 11460. Around 1945, some of the NE-10's received electric generators (axle-powered), lights, and radios. As seen here, a wagon wheel radio antenna has been installed on the roof, and a battery box is carried bblow the floor. When built, the NE-10's were painted in the standard mineral red paint scheme. Later, some NE-10's were painted in CB&Q's MOW Orange paint, as seen here, and later still, some were painted in#the silver paint scheme. These waycars replaced many of the assigned waycars in Chicago - Denver freight service. Many of the wood waycars were assigned to specific conkuctors, and this explains this waycar's position between freight cars on this train. Upon arrival at Galesburg (crew change point), the cars behind this waycar and the wood waycar at the end wil be removed and the train will continue with this waycar carrying the markers. The wood waycar will be set off on the Galesburg caboose track until its assigned conductor marks up for a return trip. That's an interesting trailer ahead of the waycar, a Bessemer open top, and the canvas cover is stecilled B&LE, barely visible between the ladder rungs of the waycar.

CB&Q NE12A 13577
Title:  CB&Q NE12A 13577
Description:  CB&Q Class NE-12A 13577 westbound at Aurora, Illinois on July 22, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q's shops in Havelock,Neb}aska built the first NE12's in 1954 (#'s 13525-13559) and built an additional 30 NE12A's between August and December 1960 (#'s 13560-13589). This particular waycar was built in Oovember 1960, and like all NE12's and NE12A's featured a Waugh Cushio Underframe, two-way radios, electric lights, axle generators, roller bearings, and oil heat (Vapor Oil heatkrs on the NE12A's and some NE12's). These waycars (as cabooses were known on the CB&Q) departed from the usual CB&Q practice of assigning waycars to conductors, and were used in system wide pool service. This waycar eventuamly became BN 10348. On the other track is observation car 226, "Jupiter", bringing up the rear of Train #11, the Nebraska Zephyr. It was built in 1936 as part of the secona Twin Cities Zephyr seven car articulated trainset. By this date, it has been reduced to a five car trainset and assigned to the Nebraska Zephyr, which was mostly a mail train.

This waycar (caboose) was built at the Aurora, Illinois car shops of the CB&Q in January 1920 with a steel underframe, scrapped at Eola on February 4, 1966. It appears to have a package on the back platform, I'm not sure what that is. It may or may not be work related. It is on a train dumping ballast along the main line on Track 1 at Naperville.

CB&Q 13848
Title:  CB&Q 13848
Description:  CB&Q 13848 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 15, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The power at the front of this train was GN F-units led by GN FT 403D. One possible explanation for this situation is that the CB&Q (at the time of this photo) assigned the waycar (caboose) to specific Conductors, so for the trip from Galesburg to Chicago, the Conductor's waycar would be attached.

CB&Q NE-7 13945
Title:  CB&Q NE-7 13945
Description:  CB&Q NE-7 13945 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 15, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This waycar (caboose) was built at the Aurora, Illinois shops in September 1914, became BN 11141, and was sold for scrap to Marfax Steel & Railway Equipment in January 1973. It is seen here crossing over from Track 3 to Track 2 in Naperville. The switches were manual at the time, which explains the gentleman behind the train who has finished re-aligning the switch behind and is moving to re-align the switch on Track 2. This was a very unusual move, and likely there was a problem on Track 3 between Naperville and Downers Grove, where there were dispatcher-controlled crossovers. Also seen is scale test car 204739 in the appropriate position at the rear of the train.
