PRR 24th Street Turntable, c. 1933
Description:
AW. Here is an image of a photo by Arlington J. Wolfe that was taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's 24th Street Turntable in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1933. It was used to turn locomotives returning to Altoona after making helper/pusher runs up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back. Visible in the middle distance are several engines awaiting their next assignments. In the far distance are two structures and twin smokestacks belonging to the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. AW. Here is an image of a photo by Arlington J. Wolfe that was taken at the 24th Street Turntable in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1938. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #952, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata during January of 1918 and retired in June of 1957 after 39 years of faithful service. It's just returned from a helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin where it uncoupled and returned here, to be turned around, for yet another run up "The Mountain." William E. AW. Here is an image of a photo by Arlington J. Wolfe that was taken at the 24th Street Turntable in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1938. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4319, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during December of 1922, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in March of 1942, and retired in 1955 after 33 years of faithful service. It's just returned from a helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin where it uncoupled and returned here, to be turned around, for yet another run up "The Mountain." AW. Here is an image of a photo by Arlington J. Wolfe that was taken at the 24th Street Turntable in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1938. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5469, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during March of 1927 and retired in May of 1956 after 29 years of faithful service. It's just returned from a passenger helper run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin where it uncoupled and returned here, to be turned around, for yet another run up "The Mountain." Visible beyond it are several other locomotives that are also poised for helper/pusher runs. Beyond them are the 17th Street Bridge and several of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. AW. Here is the second of two successive images of photos by Arlington J. Wolfe that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1948. Prominent here are two unidentified Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotives: a "J" Class (2-10-4) "Texas" and an "I" Class (2-10-0) "Decapod." In this context, they're pushing a mixed-cargo freight train#around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, whereupon they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignments.
