Erie 2924 K-5 |
Description: |
Here we have an incredible Erie Railroad in Youngstown photo taken almost 75 years ago to this day! Its September 12, 1941 as this westbound Erie passenger train pauses downtown. The fireman is standing on the tender of Erie K-5 #2924 taking on water with the original St. Columba Cathedral looking over on top of the hill. Everything in this photo is gone. What looks to be six tracks in this photo - all gone today. St. Columba is gone as well, suffering a fire from a lightning strike in 1954. The new St. Columba, built in the same location, does not compare to this beautiful structure. Photo taken by G. A. Doeright of Poland, Ohio, from the James Pope collection. |

NKP 171 |
Description: |
Nickel Plate #171, a 4-6-4 L1-A, was built by Brooks in March of 1927. Thirty years later, the end is very near for this locomotive, as it was sold to Luntz Iron and Steel Company as scrap. Its last month of revenue service was June of 1956. Over a year later, here it sits on Sunday August 18, 1957 by the roundhouse in Bellevue, Ohio. Photo by James Pope. |

NKP 731 on the Pit |
Description: |
It's Sunday August 18, 1957 as Nickel Plate Road Berkshire #731 sits on the service tracks in Bellevue, Ohio. None of the NKP's 80 Berkshires were built with Mars lights. The bracket and Mars light were added to brand new 779 in 1949 for the Chicago Railroad Fair. The entire fleet of 112 Berkshires got them in 1950-51 and ran with them on until the end of steam in 1958. In less than a year, all steam on the NKP would be done. Photo by Jim Pope. |

NKP 752 Getting Serviced |
Description: |
A brave man this Nickel Plate Road employee is for wearing all white while serving a steam locomotive! Nickel Plate Road Berkshire #752 is seen getting service at the roundhouse in Bellevue, Ohio on Sunday August 18, 1957. I wonder if this man knew that the end of steam on the Nickel Plate was about to end forever in about a year's time. Photo by James Pope. |

NKP 770 on the Turntable |
Description: |
It's Friday May 30, 1958 as Nickel Plate Road #770 (2-8-4) takes a spin on the turntable in Conneaut, Ohio at the roundhouse. Note the, what looks to be, ALCO switcher still in the roundhouse. Photo by James Pope. |

Not the best quality, but an interesting photo none the less. It's Tuesday July 22, 1958 as Nickel Plate Road ALCO PA-1 #187 and mate lead a short passenger train through Lorain, Ohio. Note the interesting cutaway for the bell on the nose of this unit. This train is made up of four baggage/mail cars and five passenger cars. Photo by James Pope. |

NKP Class Leader GP30 and RS3 |
Description: |
The Nickel Plate Road was late to dieselize. Still running 2-8-4 Berkshire steam locomotives until mid-1957, they were one of the last major railroads to run steam. The year is 1963, however, and steam is gone. Here, class leader GP30, NKP #900, sits in Conneaut, Ohio coupled to ALCO RS-3 NKP #544 on Wednesday May 29, 1963. NKP 900 still lives today and is on display at the Mad River and NKP Museum in Bellevue, Ohio. Photo by James Pope. |
