Album Info: Perhaps not a well known operation outside of Wyoming, the BDW operates 3 yards in Central Wyoming with a small fleet of SW's and a Geep. 2 of thier yards, Bonneville [BNSF 'Moneta'] and Shoshone, are in close proximity to each other with 20 miles of combined trackage and a 4.5 mile line connecting the two. Bonneville has interchange with the BNSF and is also the terminus for 28 miles of trackage rights on the BNSF to access a BDW supplier. The 3rd Yard, outside of Casper, is the newest of thier operations and has about 10 miles of trackage. Thier primary business is transloading truck-rail-truck, and mostly involves covered hopper shipments [soda ash & frack sand] at all locations with a sizeable tank car yard for oil products at Shoshone. The BDW is also strongly connected to the C&NW..The Shoshone Yard is a surviving remanant of the abandoned Lander Extension of the Cowboy Line! As well, part of the access road to BDW's Casper yard is built on the old C&NW right of way. The BDW staff is welcoming and friendly to railfans, but be sure to check in first before attempting to do any photography. Finally, a note of common sense about distances in central Wyoming; Shoshone is a very small town almost 100 miles from Casper, almost no services in between, and a fair distance from Thermopolis or Riverton/Lander. It is suggested to have a reliable vehicle and enough gas for the drive, and be mindful of the weather when You go, too: nobody wants to be stuck out there in a January blizzard, for sure! My thanks go to the friendly BDW staff for permission to photograph, and to the work of previous RRPA contributors whose photography inspired me to come and check out the BDW for myself!
