Old and new |
Description: |
A couple of MP 54 museum cars had been painted by a group on the Island, and they had prevailed on the LIRR to store them. For a time in 1977, they were at Port Washington, pushed back into one of the storage tracks there. Since the LIRR needed all the capacity they had there, the regular cars were put into the same track, giving us this odd juxtaposition. It was not the first time I had seen such a combination, though. In the early years of the M 1s, there were frequent f`ilures, and it was not unheard of for a train of MP 54s or MP 72s to be coupled to a disabled train of M 1s to push them to destination. |

Under the signals |
Description: |
One of my favorite places to watch the LIRR action was Queens Village. It was easy to get to, usually there was parking, and it was busy. The added attraction was the row of PRR style position light signals at the east end of the station. Watching the lights change as trains knocked them down and they were cleared was endlessly fascinating. An eastbound Huntington train rolls under the signals, about to cross over from track 3 to track 2 as it makes its way through Queens interlocking, just to the east. The tower is visible at far left, beyond the signal bridge. Note the clear signal on track 4; a Hempstead train is imminent. |

Metro North test train |
Description: |
The Port Washington Branch had a test facility at Shea Stadium, where there were a number of unused tracks that had been built for the 1964/65 Worlds Fair. Off line trains were somtimes seen, usually new equipment being tested, but occasionally NYCTA cars too, since the voltages were similar, and they shared an over running third rail. I recall seeing R42 cars going past my house in Little Neck. Here we see some Metro North cars waiting to go east on a test. |

An eastbound Hempstead train make its station stop at Hollis during track maintenance. The normal route for Hempstead trains is to use track 4, the platform track. Busy day |
Description: |
Great Neck was always a busy place at train time. The double track on the Port Washington Branch ended here, so trains often met at the station. The schedule had them meeting at the next station west, Little Neck, but things being what they are, meets here were common. The idea was that the westbound would clear, allowing the eastbound to move on with no delay. Its not always a perfect world, and this pair didnt quite meet as intended. The eastbound train, on the right, is just now pulling out, having got his signal, while the westbound makes his stop. |

Long Beach train |
Description: |
A Long Beach train rolls to a stop at Lynbrook. It will diverge here to head through Oceanside and Island Park before reaching Long Beach. Note the baggage elevator, a holdover from Pennsy days when the Long Island used to handle baggage and mail. |

West Hempstead train |
Description: |
A West Hempstead train rolls through Valley interlocking and into the station. It has come off the branch, which diverges to the left beyond Valley tower, and will connect here with Far Rockaway and Long Beach trains. West Hempstead was a poor stepchild on the west end, seeing only token service-about every two hours on weekends. |

West into the sun |
Description: |
A westbound Babylon train rolls into the late day sun as it heads for Jamaica and Penn Station. Note the PRR style pedestal position light signal. It is showing a stop indication. These were unique to the PRR and affiliates. It was like a dwarf, but on a pole for better visibility. The indications were read as if on a dwarf signal. Two lights vertical would be a "slow clear" indication. |
