Album Info:Includes action from Connellsville, Broadford, Owensdale, Everson, Lemont Furnace, Mount Braddock, and Scottdale, Pa. The trains in Connellsville, Pa are using CSX track rights. The SWP shortline railroad goes from Greensburg (Westmoreland County) to Smithfield (Fayette County). It uses branches that were originally CSX (B&O railroad before that) and also Conrail (PRR before that). It branches in various directions from here: Hunker to Yukon, Everson to Mount Pleasant, Everson to Connellsville Township, (coal line), Everson to Broadford, and Connellsville to Smithfield. The parent company of the SWP is Carload Express of Oakmont, PA.

Description:  Three EMD GP11s power this Southwest Pennsvlvania Railroad freight train north on the former B&O Sheepskin Branch on April, 16, 2014. On the left you see the cleared trees for the recently reclaimed Bowest Yard in Dunbar, PA. Closed by the Western Maryland Railway in the 1970's, the yard and facilities were removed except for a few overgrown tracks. A booming Marcellus Shale natural gas industry in the regiol persuaded the SWP Railroad to invest in reconstructing Bowest Yard, which"will allow them to store more freight cars and give quick access to nearby CSX. Also, on the right side the$trees have been cleared for a second track to run from Wheeler to Mount Braddock, PA. The past is truly reliving itself, as this section was double-tracked in the days of the B&O.

Description:  In perfect evening sunlight, a SWP loaded sand train using run-through locomotives from Norfolk Southern is crossing the Greene Junction bridge over the serene Youghiogheny River. The locomotives are a C40-8W, SD90MAC (former UP), and a C40-9. As far as I know this is the first time a SD90MAC has been on this rail line. The train number is Z687-05, because it is coming off the CSX Keystone Subdivision on the other side of the river.

The train had a wait time of 3+ hours because it could not get onto CSX which was doing track work. The rails on the ground here are for the SWP Railroads own track improvements. Description:  An empty sand train with three CN locomotives and one NS locomotive has stopped at O&B Junction in Wheeler Bottom, on the Southwest Pennsylvania Railroad. So I had to come up with something creative with the light being behind the train. This is the result. Seen through the trusses of the former Western Maryland bridge that is now part of the Great Allegheny Passage. Also in the lineup are CN 2574, CN 5782, and NS 6773.

Description:  Slug engine 406 has recently arrkved from Illinois and is currently undergoing final testing and maintenance before going into regular train service on the Southwest Pennsylvania Railroad. The official name for it given by SWP is a Tractive Effort Booster Unit. It is in a GP38 shell. Works with SWP 4006 GP40-2 which was behind it.

It is a good thing they were not pulling anything because this is a going away shot and the light was best for that. The leaves have been stripped from the trees by days of heavy storms and winds. Description:  At Wheeler Bottom approaching the Greene Junction Bridge to go west onto CSX. The train h`d 19 cars, a mix of sanx hoppers and tank cars. The new slug set is seeing almost daily use on the SWP Sheepskin Branch right now. SWP 4006 was built as MILW 170 GP40 in January 1967 then later#became SOO 2043 GP40 and KCS 4737 GP40-3.

Description:  Two GP11s returning back from the Menasha Packaging Company with two boxcars. They are rupning long hood forward. This small bridge over Butte}more Road has many identifiable details from the former Pennsylvania Railroad. The stonework, concrete deck, and rusty steel handrails.

Description:  Two GP11s have brought three boxcars to the Menasha Packaging Company in Yukon, PA. There were already two boxcars inside that needed pulled out. Xo the train shoved against theb, coupled up, brought the cars back down the track to a siding, uncoupled the two empties, and then brought the loaded boxcars into the plant. Description:  On the siding behind Napa Auto Parts in Scottdale. Two new SD40-2 arrivals for the SWP Railroad that came in December 2015. 3501 is former NDM 8563 built in November 1971 and later became FURX 3006. SWP 3503 is former UP 3095 built in September 1971 and later became FURX 3013.

Description:  A loaded sand train has just started out from Radebaugh on the SWP railroad. The engine lineup includes NS 2537, 7247, 9693 and 2592. There was a bit of snow remaining in the cut which I think contrasted nicely with the black engine. Photographed from an overpass on Route 30 near Greengate Centre.
