Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-4-2 class P-6-A 2591, date, location, and photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. The chosen date and location based on the February 1, 1952 CB&Q Locomotive Assignment Sheet. However, a couple of tall buildings can be seen just in front of the pilot, so I suspect this might be East Alton, Illinois. Number 2591 was built by the Rogers Locomotive And Machine Works of Patterson, New Jersey in 1903 as class P-2 number 1579, renumbered in 1904 to 2523. In 1927 it was rebuilt by the CB&Q to class P-6-A and renumbered to 2591. It was retired and sold for scrap in April 1954. The difference between a class P-6 and P-6-A was simply the original locomotives; the P-6's were Baldwins, the P-6-A's were Rogers.

The following is from the book, Steam Locomotives Of The Burlington Route, by Bernard G. Corbin and William F. Kerka: The P-3-C engines were of the balanced-compound type. Twenty of these were built by Baldwin in 1904 and 1905, and were assigned to the road as 2700-2719. The first ten has 78 inch drivers while the rest were fittted with 74 inch drivers. The locomotives had all four of their cylinders in the same horizontal plane. The high-pressure cylinders were placed between the frame and drove the first pair of drivers through a cranked axle. The outside low-pressure cylinders were coupled to the second pair in the usual manner. Stephenson link motion controlled the steam distribution through piston valves. The inside and outside cranks on the same side were positioned 180 degrees apart so as to neutralize the disturbing forces. The first engine of this class had a one-piece, forged-steel crank axle. The rest had axles built up from nine separate pieces, this type proved more satisfactory. In general appearance, the P-3-C engines were similar to the P-2-C Atlantics except that the cylinders were located further forward to accommodate the inside driving rods to the first axle. This also resulted in a somewhat longer boiler and tube length, 19 feet for the P-3-C compared to 16 feet 9 inches for the P-2-C. Trial runs with the first P-3-C engine, No. 2700, were made in July 1904 between McCook, Nebraska and Akron, Colorado, a distance of 143 miles. Compared to three single-expansion locomotives, a 2-6-2 type and two P-2 Atlantics, engine No. 2700 developed a greater capacity and consumed less fuel and water per horsepower hour than the others. She hauled a twelve-car train, weighing about 580 tons, over the (test) distance in 32 minutes, for an average of 42.26 mph. During the same month, engine No. 2700 made a continuous run from Creston to Chicago in nine hours. The average speed for the 393 mile distance was 43.67 mph. At that time this was regarded as an unusual performance. Number 2700 was rebuilt to class P-6 and renumbered 2583 during 1928. Modifications included replacing the drivers with 69 inch diameter and replacement of the compound cylinders with single-expansion cylinders. Number 2583 was retired and sold for scrap in December 1953.

Apparenuly there was a design change in the tenders, as this photo shows the roll-top design, and the photo of 2700 shows a rectangular design. Number 2718 was rebuilt to class P-5 and given road number 2574 during 1924. This was&accomplished by adding new (single expansion) cylinders, new front engine frame, Schmidt-type superheater, new tube sheets and tube arrangement, and the application of Walschaerts valve gear. The eight foot long cabs were eventually replaced with shorter ones. Number 3574 was retired in May 1947.

Number 2804 was built by Baldwin in May 1906 ( c/n 28281 ) as a class S-1, rebuilt in 1926 as a class S-1-A, and sold for scrap in March 1954. The following is from the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 13, SHOVELNOSES, edited by F. Hol Wagner: When the diesels failed, steam frequently came to the rescue. But first, the coupler pocket and air hose covers had to be removed from the pilot of the shovelnose unit, and hoses and coupler (carried in the cab) installed before the rescue engine could be coupled up. In this instance, S-1-A Pacific 2804 drags ailing 9907A and B and an 11-car DZ (Denver Zephyr) into Denver on September 24, 1938, an hour and 16 minutes late. A broken water pump was the culprit here, disrupting the functioning of the lead motor's cooling system.

This locomotive was built in 1906 by Baldwin (c/n 28298), one of the first Pacific-types on the Burlington Route. It was rebuilt to S-1-A in 1926 and retired September 1939. The following is from the book, Steam Locomotives Of The Burlington Route, by Bernard G. Corbin and William F. Kerka: The Class S-1 Baldwin-built Pacifics were a direct development of the R-5 Prairies. Thirty S-1 engines, No. 2800-2829, made their appearance on the road in 1906, followed by fifteen Schenectady-built engines, No. 2830-2844 in 1907. The boilers of the S-1 types were similiar to the R-5 Prairies, except that the tube length was increased by 24". Although the driving wheel diameter was increased to 74" on the S-1 engines, the cylinders as well as the driving and trailing wheel axle journals were of the same dimensions as the R-5. This permitted interchangability of parts in the machinery and running gear of the Pacifics and Prairie-type engines. During the mid-1920's, the great majority of the S-1 and S-2 locomotives were rebuilt and reclassed as S-1A and S-2A respectively. Among the changes made during this rebuilding period were the application of new cylinders and accessories, new main frames and frame crossties, application of Schmidt-type superheater, new tube sheets and tubes to suit the superheater, new Walschaerts valve gear, new steam pipes, new front deck plate, application of cross-compound air pumps, new main axles and main driving boxes, and the application of either Worthington or Elesco feedwater heating systems. Some of the rebuilt engines were fitted with Delta-B trailing trucks having Franklin boosters. Most of the tenders on the S-1A and S-2A engines were also rebuilt, and four-wheel Commonwealth trucks were substituted for the pedestal type. Some of the Pacifics spent their last days in suburban service around the Chicago area. By the end of 1950 just about all had been retired.

There's a flag in the front coupler, it's dark, so either blue or red.

The June 1, 1935 CB&Q Locomotive Assignment Sheet shows this locomotive assigned to the Casper Division, it was an oil burner, a characteristic of Lines West locomotives. The main and eccentric rods are removed, it's likely awaiting scrapping, so I picked Denver as the location and 1951 as the date. Number 2814 was built by Baldwin in June 1906 as a class S-1 ( c/n 28412 ) rebuilt by the CB&Q in 1927 to a class S-1-A, sold for scrap in February 1951.

There's water gushing over the back of the tender, and a gentleman loading coal, so my guess is that they're getting ready to go somewhere.

Number 2829 was built by Baldwin in January 1907 ( c/n 30011 ) as a Class S-1, rebuilt in 1927 to Class S-1-A, sold for scrap in January 1951. I must apologize for the quality of the photo. I usually clean these scans up, but this one was too far gone. In the 1980's you could purchase prints from Baldwin negatives from H. L. Broadbelt, and they were of excellent quality, to the point that you could read the number on the builder's plate. However, this one came to me like this, so I presumed that the Baldwin negative was damaged. I took a run at cleaning it up (below the trailing truck on the turntable) but it would take a long time to make this presentable. So I'm uploading as-is, maybe at a future date I can replace it.

Number 2834 was built during 190; as a CB&Q Class S-1, rebuilt during 1925 to CB&Q Class S-1-A, sold for scrap in December 1952. Alco built 15 S-1's during 1907, road numbers 2830-2844.

During 1925 this locomotive was rebuilt with the application of new cylinders and accessories, new main frame and frame crossties, Schmidt superheater, new tube sheets and tbes to suit the superheater, new Walschaerts valve gear, new steam pipes, new front deck plate, new cross-compound air pump, new main axles and main driving boxes,#and a Worthington feedwater heater. The tender was also rebuilt with four-wheel Commonwealth trucks replacing the original pedestal type.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-1 2837 at (I believe) Schenectady, New York on an unknown day in 1907, photo by Alco, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built by Schenectady (Alco) in 1907 (c/n 43482), one of 15 class S-1's (#'s 2830-2844), copies of 30 Baldwin-built class S-1's built in 1906 road #'s 2800-2829. The S-1 class was based on the Class R-5 2-6-2 Prairies, with the tube length increased by 24 inches and the driver diameter increased to 74 inches. The cylinders, driving and trailing axle journals were the same dimensions as the R-5's permitting interchangeability between the two classes. This particular locomotive was rebuilt to Class S-1-A in 1924 and sold for scrap in April 1951. Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-1 2850 presumed at Philadephhia, Pennsylvania sometime in 1909, photo by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 2850 was built by Baldwin in 1909 (c/n 33446), rebuilt in 1924, retired in February 1951 and sold for scrap. It was part of an order for 25 modified Class S-1 4-6-2's (#'s 2845-2869). The first Class S-1's were based on the R-5 2-6-2's, this order substituted Walschaerts valve gear for Stephenson valve gear, although the cylinder piston valves were still located inside. During the mid-1920's, the majority of the S-1's were rebuilt and re-classed as S-1-A. Among the changes during this rebuilding were the application of new cylinders and accessories, new main frames and frame crossties, application of Schmidt-type superheater, new tube sheets and tubes to suit the superheater, new Walschaerts valve gear, new steam pipes, new front deck plate, application of cross-compound air pumps, new main axles and main driving boxes, and the application of either Worthington or Elesco feedwater heating systems. Some of the rebuilt engines were fitted with Delta-B trailing trucks having Franklin boosters. Most of the tenders were also rebuilt, and four-wheel Commonwealth trucks were substituted for the pedestal type.

Once upon a time you could purchase steam locomotive prints from a gentleman named Herbert L. Broadbelt. This was one of those photos, an unusual action photo in the Baldwin Locomotive Works negative collection (note the negative number in the lower right). It was undated and no location was noted. I roughed in Denver as the location because it looks like a major terminal, but does not look like Chicago. It could be Galesburg, Burlington, Omaha, or Kansas City, I don't know. Leave a comment if you know better. The date is also roughed in based on the build date (1910, c/n 34589), all steel cars pictured, a photo in the book, Steam Locomotives of the Burlington Route, which shows this locomotive in 1933 with a different (Sunbeam, I believe) headlight in commuter service. Number 2912 was not rebuilt, but was retired in June 1935. It was one of fifty S-2's built by Baldwin for the CB&Q, assigned road numbers 2900-2949.

I'm hoping that Larkspur is close to Sand Creek, which is how the print is marked. Number 2960 was built by Baldwin in 1915 (c/n 42160) and sold for scrap in July 1952. At some point it acquired a Worthington feedwater heater, it wasn't delivered with one. Fifteen Class S-3 Pacific types were built by Baldwin in 1915 (road #'s 2950-2964) and an additional ten were built in 1918 (road #'s 2965-2974). Additionally, in 1922 two more S-3 design locomotives were built for the FW&DC (road #'s 556-557) and three for the C&S (road #'s 373-375, class F-3C). The C&S also acquired (around 1936) CB&Q 2970, 2973, and 2965, becoming C&S 370, 371, and 372 respectively, classed F-3B. The three Class F-3C locomotives built for the C&S had 69 inch drivers (as opposed to the 74 inch drivers on the CB&Q locomotives), which were better suited to C&S grades and resulted in a tractive force increase from the stock 42,400 lb. to 44,000 lb.. .
