UP GP40 509 George's Creek
Title:  UP GP40 509 George's Creek
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad GP40 509 and 502 at Yellville, Arkansas on December 11, 1983, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 509 appears to have been originally MKT GP40 203. It is pictured on the George's Creek bridge, the original bridge structure was built in April 1903, a 1900 foot long, 60 foot high wood trestle, built to accept engines weighing 86 tons, and in 1903 there was no highway below it. I'm researching when the steel replacement was built, sometime in the 1930's. Previous to the steel replacement, the speed restriction on the wood trestle was 12 mph. Quote from Mike Adams book: "One of the more far reaching programs outlined in 1915 was to fill in 47 of the 57 high trestles between Cotter and Crane. The other 10 would be re-built as steel and concrete trestles. The original trestles were built with the best grade of wood but their useful life was approaching an end. As work progressed it became apparent that earthen fill was the best method, and eventually only four of the great trestles were re-built with steel although some were a combination of fill and steel due to circumstances. Work started in 1915 and was not completed for another 20 years. The longest bridge, that spanned the George's Creek Valley, was 1900 feet long." The bridge is perhaps 50 years old by the time of the photograph, and crosses over a highway, which in turn crosses over a creek. There are several triple crossings of this nature in the US, here is one. Most of this information is from the book, 'The White River Railway', by Walter (Mike) Adams.

UP UM20 620
Title:  UP UM20 620
Description:  UP UM20 620 at Council Bluffs, Iowa on an unknown day in October 1963, photographer unknown (although I believe it was Lou Schmitz, the slide did not have an Author's name), Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built in September 1954 (c/n 32218) as part of an A-B-B-A test vehicle for GE's entry into the road locomotive business.

This unit and one B unit were equipped with 12-cylinder Cooper-Bessemer FVBL-12 diesel prime movers (these two were informally known as Model UM-16, 1600 hp), while the other A-B units were equipped with 8-cylinder C-B FVBL-8 diesels (informally known as UM-12 for the 1200 hp they produced). The purpose was to test existing designs in road locomotives. Alco had upset GE by not bidding on a couple of locomotive contracts that GE was interested in, so GE set out on its own to build a road diesel, which in the long run proved fatal to Alco. From 1954-1959, the UM-20 (also known as UM-20B) tested on the Erie, painted in Erie colors and numbered #750A-B-C-D. Since GE's design department had a hand in locomotive designs at Alco, there is a similarity between this design and the FA-1/FA-2 Alcos. These locomotives lead to the design and development of the U25B. After the Erie road tests, the locomotives were returned to GE, where all four units were upgraded to 2000 horsepower locomotives with 12-cylinder C-B FVB12LT diesel prime movers, and sold to the UP on October 21, 1959 as #'s 620-620B-621B-621. They were retired by the UP in 1963 and traded to GE on U50's.

UP U25B 625
Title:  UP U25B 625
Description:  UP U25B 625 at Denver, Colorado on August 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 625 was built in August 1961 (c/n 34224), retired in September 1972, sold to Morrison Knudsen becoming MK 11, scrapped by M-K in October 1981. It is an early production U25B, one of 11 units delivered to the UP with high short hoods and vertical stairs (road #'s 625-632 and 634-636). The original GE U25B demonstrators were picked up by the Frisco, becoming SLSF 753-756. The steps and narrow walkway around the ends were unacceptable to the railroad, so GE redesigned the U25B and introduced their version of the low short hood. The second four demonstrators, GE 2501-2504 were sold to the UP, becoming UP 633-836. Only 633 (ex-GE 2501) was equipped with a low short hood. Later, in August 1962, the UP acquired four more U25B's with low short hoods (#'s 637-640), for a total of 16 U25B's on UP's roster, out of 478 total turned out by GE. In this photo the trailing unit is steam generator-equipped UP GP30B 738B.

UP U25B 626
Title:  UP U25B 626
Description:  UP U25B 626 and GP30 852 at Denver, Colorado on August 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The GP30 was introduced as the GP22, but when GE announced the U25B, GM's Marketing Department decided to one-up GE and changed the model designation to GP30. It was decided that the GP30 had 30 improvements over the GP20, the most significant was the central air intake, doing away with carbody louvers and slightly pressurizing the long hood to keep the dirt out.

Title:  UP U25B 633
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad U25B 633 at Council Bluffs, Iowa on an unknown day in February 1963, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. The slide was in poor shape, it has quite obviously been run through Photoshop. Number 633 was built in February 1962 as GE demonstrator 2501 (c/n 34239). It is one of the early production U25B's with vertical steps. Here is the footnote from utahrails.net: UP 633-636 were built as GE demonstrators 2501, 2503, 2502, 2504, with original builder's date of February 1962; sold to UP in mid July 1962. Upon delivery to UP in July 1962 the build dates were changed to reflect the new warranty date of July 1962.

UP GP40 660
Title:  UP GP40 660
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad GP40 660 on the last northbound UP train out of Cotter, Arkansas on December 11, 1992, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The next day the rails were leased to and operated by the Missouri & Northern Arransas Railroad. Number 660 was built in April 1967 as WP GP40 3511 (c/n 33056) on EMD Order 7981, became UP 660 on July 16, 1984, was retired by the UP April 5, 1993 and retured to the lessor. It was rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen, completed as a GP40-2 for the KCS and numbered 4774 on January 4, 1994.

The bridge was built in 1903, with the survey work and planning begun by the White River Railway, which was purchased by the Saint Louis Iron Mountain & Southern Railway on March 26, 1903. At the time, this location was known as Lake's Ferry, but the name was changed to Cotter, named after William Cotter, a manager on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Both the StLIM&S and MP were interests of Jay Gould, and the purpose of the bridge and route was to connect the two properties. The Army Corps of Engineers determined that the White River was navigable, so a turn span was built to allow passage of river traffic, which all but disappeared after the arrival of the railroad. When the bridge was completed, the span was turned just once for testing, and never turned again. It may appear that there is plenty of room for river barges to pass below, but before the dam was built about ten miles upstream, spring floods would raise the river to within a few feet of the bottom of the bridge, flooding the railroad yard and roundhouse just a few hundred yards downstream.

UP RS27 675
Title:  UP RS27 675
Description:  UP RS27 675 and 676 (1/2 of UP's RS27 fleet) at Valley, Nebraska on September 2, 1962, Kodachrome by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Alco built five RS27 (DL-640) demonstrators, numbered 640-1 through 640-5, which toured 22 railroads between January - April 1960. After the tour, three of the demonstrators were sent to the NYC for road tests, where they were assigned primarily to the Flexi-van trains. There they replaced normal motive power consists of 4-6 1800 hp units, and met tight schedules repeatedly. Track speeds of 70 mph were consistently maintained over 580 miles permitted over the 950 miles between New York City and Chicago, with an additional 130 miles at above 60 mph. Alco demonstrator numbers 640-2 through 640-5 were sold to the UP, becoming 675-678, the only RS27's on the UP. All were retired by late 1970 or early 1971, and these two were sold to the Montreal Locomotive Works, becoming the basis of a lease fleet.

UP RS27 675
Title:  UP RS27 675
Description:  UP RS27 675 at Council Bluffs, Iowa on an unknown day in January 1964, Kodachrome by unknown (probably Lou Schmitz), Chuck Zeiler collection.

Alco built this locomotive as the second of five demonstrators and assigned it road number 640-2 (DL-640 was Alco's specification for the RS27, the numeral was used as road numbers) in December 1959 (c/n 83556). It was powered by a 16-cylinder Model 251B prime mover coupled to a GT581 main generator, Type MG-8 power plant regulator, driving four GE 752 traction motors, producing 2400 horsepower. It featured an advanced (in 1959) transistorized control system, known as Type E, which utilized a GY27A1 auxiliary generator as the exciter.

The RS27 was an upgrade of the RS11, using the same basic frame, but packing a 16-cylinder diesel in place of the RS11's 12-cylinder diesel, resulting in the stubby appearance of the short hood as the cab was moved forward to make room. Alco built five DL-640/RS27 demonstrators, three of which conducted shakedown tests on the D&H before moving to the NYC for road tests. Although the demonstrators performed well on the NYC's high speed Flexi-Van trains, only one order resulted, and that was for a single unit to the Green Bay & Western. It took another year before the next order, and that was for four of the demonstrators (#'s 640-2 through 640-5), purchased by the UP in September 1961 and numbered 675-678. Alco demonstrator 640-1 was rebuilt to a Century 424 and sold to Pennsylvania Railroad as their 2415. After retirement on the UP in 1971, two of the former demonstrators (675 and 676) moved to Canada and formed the beginning of a lease fleet for MLW. The sales figures were not too impressive for the RS27; a total of 37 units were built in a production run of a little over one year. This was due to a number of factors, not the least was EMD's introduction of the GP30 and GE's new U25B, all available at about the same time. A personal observation, I have no evidence to back this up, but in researching this, I noted that Alco had really upset the UP with their FA1 model (all of UP's FA1's needed warranty repairs, 90 diesel engine blocks were replaced), and the RS27's were likely a peace offering. These four locomotives were orphans on UP's system. I think Alco recognized that they needed UP's business to survive, and probably gave the UP a good deal on these locomotives. After all, they were demonstrators, and had a lot of miles on them before getting UP paint.

UP RS27 677
Title:  UP RS27 677
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad RS27 677 at Council Bluffs, Iowa on an unknown day in September 1962, I'm pretty sure the?photographer was Lou Schmitz (Kodachrome slide unmarked except for location and date), Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 677 was completeed in January 1960 as Alco Demonstrator 640-4, one of five RS27 (DL-640) demonstrators built and numbered 640-1 through 640-5. Including the five demonstrators, only 27 RS27's were built, directly competing with GE's U25B and EMD's GP30. The UP acquired four RS27 demonstrators in September 1961, and acquired four production U25B demonstrators at the same time. The railroad followed up with an order for 12 more U25B's, but did not order additional RS27's. This unit was wrecked November 23, 1968 at Aikens, Nebraska, and scrapped by the UP at Omaha.

UP GP30 733
Title:  UP GP30 733
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad GP30 733 at Marysville, Kansas on August 28, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The class lights are lit, so I'm guessing this is Train Extra 733 West. A few years earlier and the numberboards would have displayed X-733, or whatever the assigned train number was. Also seen is UP DD35 97B, an unknown GP30, and three stock cars at the head end of a departing freight.

UP GP30B 738B
Title:  UP GP30B 738B
Description:  UP GP30B 738B at Denver, Colorado on August 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in July 1963 (c/n 28253) on EMD Order 7649, this unit was equipped with a steam generator. The UP received a total of 40 GP30B's from EMD, the first 27 (road #'s 700B-726B) were freight-only units, the rest (road #'s 727B-739B) were equipped with steam generators for standby passenger service. Around the beginning of Amtrak the steam generators were retired in place. This particular unit was retired and sold for scrap to Naporano Iron & Metal, Newark, New Jersey, on May 5 1981. Leading the GP30B is one of the early production U25B's, UP 625, equipped with a high short hood.

UP E9 914
Title:  UP E9 914
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad E9 914 at Denver Union Station in Denver, Colorado on August 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Unfortunately, I did not record this train's number, so my best guess (consulting the June 1965 Official Guide) is that this was unnamed Train 6-8, originating in Los Angeles and continuing on to Chicago. I have several photos of this same train, one shows the locomotives being fueled at the station platform, so it was a through train. The lighting suggests that this was a morning departure from Denver, and Train 6-8 departed Denver at 10:15 AM.

UP E9 914
Title:  UP E9 914
Description:  UP E9 914 at Denver Union Station on August 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Possibly the last E9A unit built, this locomotive was completed by EMD in January 1964 (c/n 28669) on EMD Order 7689. It was retired by the UP in May 1971 and sold to Amtrak, becoming AMTK 419. It was retired by Amtrak in 1980, sold to Precision National Corporation in June 1981 and scrapped. The job of the gentleman pictured on this day was to drive a truck of diesel fuel onto the passenger platform at Denver Union Station and refuel these locomotives. The front of this locomotive sure has been pelted.
