Viewing Album: Northeast WI, Spring 2020
By:
T. P. Bruss
Dates:
3/19/2020 - 6/20/2020
Album Info:
Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2020, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

NOKL 819029
Description:
NOKL 819029, former C&NW, was part of the consist of a CN through freight paralleling Union St. as it backed into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

CN 3059, CN 2861, CN 3276
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Union St. as it backs into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. Train had three locomotives, CN 3059, CN 2861, CN 3276. A couple of interesting old buildings can be seen in the background to the left. The near one is currently home to The Workers, LLC, 348 Smith St., “dealers/distributors of many types of food processing and packaging equipment as well as the supplies associated with that equipment.” The building was erected in 1927 and previously housed Alferi Laboratories, Inc. The far one is currently home to Interfaith Christian Assembly, 344 Smith St. The building was erected in 1929 and previously housed the Sawyer Paper Co., a paper dealer/wholesaler.

A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it backs into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., stands to the left. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 (construction commenced the previous year). It was briefly (ca. 1893) known as the Northern Pacific Hotel, almost certainly a reference to the short-lived corporate relationship between the WC and NP railroads. It was owned by Joe Mayer [Meyer] ca. 1907, still known as the Murer House (likely Joseph A. Mayer). It was owned by Ole M. Lyken by 1914, it was known as the Lyken Hotel ca. 1920. Circa 1923-24 it was a grocery store owned by Mrs. Mary E. Lyken, Ole’s widow (he passed away in ’23). From at least 1928 until 1939, it was the Mayerl Grocery, owned by Mayme Mayerl. At some point it was turned into a tavern and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. Previous names of the bar include (in no particular order), Susie’s Trackside, Chesapeake Pub, Gigi’s, Mychal’s Bar (Mychal’s On Sherry Street), Sit and Sip Tavern, et al. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The parking lot to the left was the site of the WC (later SOO) depot, built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

IC 3108 and GTW 4907
Description:
An unusually small CN local pauses in front of the depot/yard office at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 7 Jun. '20. There used to be a diamond right about where the rear truck of IC 3108 is, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building behind the depot/yard office is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Description:
FTSX 100104 MW was part of the consist of a CN through freight crossing N. Lake St. via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 7 Jun. '20. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible in the background. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.

This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Description:
A CN local passes Arrowhead Park (left) and the corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, (right) as it heads southwest via former joint MILW/SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 19 Jun. '20. Plexus occupies part of the former site of the P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years. The oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006. The mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The paper mill's water treatment facility stood to the left. Arrowhead Park is a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to these tracks.

This facility stands adjacent to where the South Channel of the Fox River meets Little Lake Butte des Morts. Plus, lakes have shores, rivers have banks. As I roll my eyes, I sarcastically remind myself that common peasants dare not question science, ever, but especially during our ongoing pandemic. Science likes to pretend to be infallible.
