Not a railroad structure |
Description: |
But important to the railroad nonetheless. This grain elevator at Yukon OK once was served by the Rock Island; happily, this part of the Choctaw Route was still seeing local service from UP the day we were there. Out here in granger country, grain shipments were a big part of the railroad scene. This elevator is well preserved, with good signage, making it an attractive photographic subject. |

Big station |
Description: |
For a small place-there isnt much here in todays world, at least as far as the railroad is concerned, and what is sits mostly off the Turnpike interchange, yet it had a substantial station. This must have been someplace back in the day. The wood frame station stands as a reminder of those days on the MKT. It wont be here long, though. |

Well hidden |
Description: |
The MKT station at Big Cabin has not seen a train in many years, and has been left to the elements, as have many stations around the country. As a result, the shrubbery has grown up, in this case, obscuring the station almost completely from the road side. Yes, there is a station in there. You can see the edge of the roof at the left of the bush. |

SP station |
Description: |
A 3/4 shot of the massive SP/Rock Island station. Even though the Rock owned the track to Santa Rosa, another 50 miles west, the operating change was here. This was also the terminus for Rock Islands Choctaw Route trains, which connected to the Golden State route about a mile to the east. The right of way can be seen from the US 54 overpass, and can be followed to some extent all the way to Amarillo. The Golden State route, named for the train that plied these rails from Chicago to LA, is still an active part of the UP system. |

The Southwest RR operates a former ATSF branch line out of Lordsburg NM, and has the office here at Hurley. The station is a large building, with a passenger section on the north end, and a large freight house. Attractive station |
Description: |
The former Santa Fe station at Stockton is looking good. It appears nicely kept, and the grounds are clean. For a place that made a name for itself on automobiles, California seems to have made its passenger rail attractive and useful, for the most part. Maybe they can teach someone at Amtrak HQ a thing or two. |

Modern look |
Description: |
In the 1950s, some railroads replaced older stations, perhaps in the hope that a newer facility would attract more ridership, though some older stations were just aging and needed replacement. One such place, then a division point on the MP line to Pueblo, was Hoisington Kan. This mid century modern structure still stands at the edge of downtown, and is used by Watcos Kansas & Oklahoma, which operates a variety of cast off Santa Fe and MP lines in Kansas and Oklahoma. |

Old station where I didnt expect one |
Description: |
We were on our way to my wifes family in Georgia, and stopped at the Russell Cave NM, just down the road and across the state line in Alabama. I was looking for a short cut back out to US 72, and wandered into Orme. Lo and behold, theres a station there. Apparently this was once(100 years ago) a big enough coal producing area that there was a railroad here. Im guessing it connected with the Southern, which passes a few miles away, along US 72. This is the east side of the station. |

Title: |
It will be here forever |
Description: |
The 1928 built coaling tower standing astride the ATSF, now Watco K&O line, is still standing, a tribute to its sturdy construction. Many of these towers remain because they are too expensive to tear down, having been built of reinforced concrete in an era when things were built to last an eternity. |
