Album Info:For several years, NS ran 41T on the Tier. The train originated at Enola, ran the ex PRR and D&H to Binghamton, then west to Buffalo and Toronto. It usually had CN power, including IC and WC units. I was driving for Broome County Transit at the time, working split shifts, which left the middle of my days open. This was usually a good match for 41T, which tended to get out of Binghamton mid day, and made for a good chase. It became 31T in March 2004 or so, continuing to run the Tier, though later the routing would change to a CP-D&H move north of Binghamton, ending my Tier chases of the train. It was good while it lasted. We'll also see some shots of the train south of Binghamton on the line to Scranton.

41T at Johnson
Title:  41T at Johnson
Description:  This location used to be known as West BD. Its where the former Lackawanna main swung over to join the Erie after the consolidation of facilities in 1959, with the DLW abandoning most of its line from here to Corning. Much of that right of way became NY 17. Here 41T rolls west off the DLW onto the Erie, having come off the CP at BD, and past the DLW passenger station on what is now the Johnson Running track. The track in the foreground is all that remains of the DLW here, now the Vestal Spur.

Six big ones
Title:  Six big ones
Description:  The CN trains must have gotten out of their slot, since they rarely ran with more than four units, and even that was unusual. This 41T seen across the corn at Hiawatha Rd has six, so a set must have gotten out of its cycle, and is now being moved back home as part of this massive consist, with 85 cars in tow.

A little closer to home
Title:  A little closer to home
Description:  I lived just over the hill from this location, and it was an easy thing to get here for a shot at a pretty location, especially this day with the fall color going full out. Today was one of those days, as I caught 41T with 71 cars behind an NS standard cab GE, unusual because CN power almost always led on this train, and because by this time, wide cabs pretty much ruled the world, and the standard cabs had become something of a novelty.

Title:  Standing out

Bright nose
Title:  Bright nose
Description:  NS 40T sits at Endicott, just west of Page Av. I dont recall the reason why, perhaps for a recrew. Note the pole line, largely unchanged since EL handed the line over to Conrail. As much as fiber optics have opened up photo angle, sometimes the old railroad infrastructure added a lot of character to a photo.

Full set
Title:  Full set
Description:  The full set of power on todays 41T, an uncommon all NS consist. More unusual is the CR straight SD 70 that trails. Those units were bought with the CR split in mind, and numbered into the NS numbering plan, hence no "patch" on the numbers, making for a pure looking unit.

Title:  Unusual visitor
Description:  Todays 41T had a very unusual leader, a CSX unit. We saw very few of these on NS, though they were not unusual on NYSW trains due to that road handling some CSX overhead traffic to Jersey. Cresting the grade
Title:  Cresting the grade
Description:  40T, today with a pair of NS units, an unusual circumstance for this train, crests the short, steep pull south of Hallstead. The DLW once had a "low grade" here that freights used. The 24 cars on todays train will not tax the power much, though bigger trains really work here.

Old power in the lead
Title:  Old power in the lead
Description:  41T typically got a set of CNs new SD75s or GEs, or some combination of them. Occasionally an older unit would get in the mix, as well as IC units. Here we see one such mixed set crossing the Chenango River on its way out of Binghamton

From the connector
Title:  From the connector
Description:  After many years of dithering about where to locate the bridge, NYSDOT finally decided to site a Susquehanna crossing at exit 66 on NY 17, the Apalachin exit. This turned out to be a good thing for me, as it eliminated the need for me to have to go through Endicott most of the time, and also provided a good place to get a shot of a westbound, such as this 41T rolling toward Owego.
