45s
Title:  45s
Description:  Not the spinning kind, a pair of Fs. TheseÜ`re sitting on the south end of the Binghamton engine house. The former colleagues-the NYSW unit was BN 6644-are having this reunion a long way from their first home.

Coal power
Title:  Coal power
Description:  A power plant at Mt Tom Mass received coal from a mine in southwestern PA on the P&LE. Sometimes the power would run through to Binghamton, then turn back. I caught a set in the yard occasionally, though I was never able to see it on the road.

Pulling them out
Title:  Pulling them out
Description:  Conrail would not let NYSW and D&H change crews out on the main, so the stack trains had to be yarded. Sometimes, if there was a crew working with some time, they would use a yard engine to assist with the back up move. That is what this appears to be, since these trains rarely, if ever, went solo on over the road. It looks like an eastbound being backed down the Buffalo Runner to QD, where, once the train is on the main, it will go east, and this unit will go back to the yard.

Helper set
Title:  Helper set
Description:  A set of helpers rolls past the ex DLW yard tower. CSX four sixes has been drafted for the job today. NYSW used anything handy. The tower was no longer in use by this time, as all functions except the car department had been moved to the new shop building. D&H 7407 would later get rebuilt at M-K Mountaintop and repainted into the lightning stripe scheme.

Title:  Turning move
Description:  A set of power has come out of East Binghamton and across CR at BD, and will shortly clear the crossovers at the south end of Bevier St. Then it will go back down to QD, reverse and go through town on the Tier to get back to the yard. Guess they really wanted the NYSW B 40 leading.

Title:  Pusher set
Description:  An NYSW and NRL lease unit roll into East Binghamton after pushing a train up to Belden tunnel. The signal, deactivated long ago, once controlled the DLW main that passed on the outside of the yard. Now those tracks are used as running tracks, and for outbound trains awaiting power.

Description:  Most of the time, MEBU and BUME bypassed the yard at Binghamton using the&Buffalo Runner directly up to Bevier St. Every once in a while, theyd have to be switched, or the power changed. Such is the case today, as MEBU rolls into the yard for some attention.

Yard job with an unusual switch
Title:  Yard job with an unusual switch
Description:  The NY State Operation Lifesaver car was at Binghaston being switched by an RS 36. Dont recall what the event was, probably training for presenters. The car was a classroom on wheels and toured all over the state. Note the old DLW roundhouse and turntable to tie left of the car. When CP took over, they would remove the table and fill the pit, then build a new turntable.

Title:  West on track 3
Description:  Sometimes if there was a conflicting move on the Erie side, the Hornell dispatcher would run a train in or out of East Binghamton on the DLW side, known here since EL days as track 3. MEBU is getting the DLW side this morning as it heads west. It will go past the Lackawanna station downtown as it heads for West BD and the Erie main there. It's a Saturday morning, and the faithful are on hand to see the action.

Headed for the yard
Title:  Headed for the yard
Description:  Sometimes MEBU or BUME would go into East Binghamton. Such is the case today as the train has rolled onto track 5 and is headed for BD. In 15 minutes it will be across the river and in the yard. We also have an unusual unit today, ex BN 6592, an SDP 45. This one is ex GN, built in a late pre-Amtrak time when the railroads were planning to use these diesels for freight when finally relieved of running passenger trains.

HAN 2 in the yard
Title:  HAN 2 in the yard
Description:  IF the NYSW did not have a crew ready, Conrail would not let the train stay on the Tier, and NYSW had to stow it in a yard. This was done either on the Utica Branch, or at East Binghamton, depending on operational needs. Today, the choice is East Binghamton, and we see a HAN 2 pulling down to Terrace Drive behind a pair of NS units. When the NYSW crew is on, they will back out through BD and head east.

On the air
Title:  On the air
Description:  Sometimes NYSW would cut the power off an MEBU and take it to the yard, leaving one unit on to keep the air pumped up. The new power(or sometimes the power it came in with) would come out, couple on, and go west. Today, one of the original D&H 7600 series GP 39's has the honors of keeping the brakes charged at the south end of Bevier St.

On the air
Title:  On the air
Description:  Sometimes MEBU would come in and the power would be cut off, either to change for other units, or for servicing and return to the train. Usually when this happened, if NYSW expected there to be several hours before the train went west, theyd leave a unit on to keep the air charged. Today, ex Reading 7408 has this duty.
